This article examines how education reform can strengthen Lebanon’s economy by moving beyond memorization and traditional teaching methods toward competency-based education, interactive learning, teamwork, teacher training, and educational technology. It argues that rebuilding the education system around critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and practical skills is essential for producing a capable workforce and restoring Lebanon’s role as a regional center of educational excellence.

Toward an Effective Education System: How Can Education Reform Strengthen the Economy?
Lebanon has long been a center of educational excellence, with its schools and universities renowned for producing educated and qualified generations. Today, however, basic education in Lebanon is experiencing a noticeable decline. Most schools still rely on traditional teaching methods, such as rote learning and memorization, while only a small number have adopted advanced educational approaches aligned with modern developments.
This disparity in teaching methods creates a significant gap in students’ academic achievement, undermining the quality of education and the future of upcoming generations while directly affecting the prospects of the national economy.
Traditional Teaching Methods and Their Impact
Most schools rely on traditional educational methods centered on rote learning and memorizing information, depriving students of the opportunities needed to develop critical thinking, teamwork, and collaboration skills.
Consequently, students become passive recipients of information, reducing their engagement and academic achievement while weakening their capacity for creativity. Students often do not begin developing these skills until they enter university or the labor market, where they undergo training courses. Why wait until these stages? Basic education should develop these skills from the outset rather than postponing them until a later stage.
Solutions: Competency-Based Interactive Education
To improve the quality of education in Lebanon, modern educational approaches that focus on student engagement and skill development from the beginning must be adopted. Several possible solutions include:
- Competency-Based Education: This approach focuses on developing students’ practical skills, making them better prepared to confront the challenges of professional life.
- Interactive Learning and Interactive Teaching Skills: These methods engage students in the learning process and make them active participants. They include group discussions, collaborative activities, and practical applications that stimulate critical thinking and problem-solving.
- Promoting Teamwork and Collaboration: The learning environment in classrooms should be collaborative, with students working together to solve problems, thereby strengthening cooperation among them.
- Teacher Training: Training programs must be provided to enable teachers to use modern interactive teaching skills and strengthen their ability to manage classrooms through advanced methods.
Educational Technology as Part of the Solution
Educational technology is an important tool for modernizing the educational process. The use of smart boards and e-learning applications can make learning more engaging and interactive for students. Technology also helps strengthen comprehension and deepen the understanding of concepts while enabling students to apply what they learn in practical ways.
The Role of Non-Governmental Organizations and the Private Sector
Many non-governmental organizations in Lebanon provide training programs aimed at building the capacities of public-sector personnel, using advanced and interactive educational methods.
The private sector, meanwhile, increasingly relies on local and international training companies that use the latest modern educational approaches. Since these methods have demonstrated their effectiveness in institutional capacity building, why should they not also be applied in schools? Through these strategies, children can develop critical thinking and teamwork skills from an early age, preparing them to confront future challenges.
Improving Education and Supporting the Economy
Improving education in Lebanon is not merely an academic objective. It is also essential to supporting the national economy. Students who possess critical thinking and innovation skills will be better able to contribute to improving the country’s economic performance. Building an education system that promotes creativity and competence will help create a qualified workforce.
Lebanon cannot regain its position as an educational beacon in the region without undertaking fundamental reforms to its basic education system.
Adopting interactive education and developing interactive and collaborative skills in schools constitute a decisive step toward improving educational quality. Children who acquire critical thinking and teamwork skills from an early age will be better prepared to confront the challenges of the future. To build a generation capable of producing positive change in society, Lebanon must begin by modernizing its education system at its foundations.
